Curator of modern prints

Marlou de Bont

From the 19th century onwards, the book becomes a mass-produced item, printed with the help of the industrial printing press on machine-made paper. This kind of mechanisation happens little by little. In our collection policy, we date the transition to the year 1830. From then on, we speak of ‘modern prints’. Curator Marlou de Bont manages this extensive part of our collection. Do you have research questions about the modern prints in our collection? Feel free to contact her.

The Heritage Library Hendrik Conscience collects modern prints in all kinds of forms: ranging from books and magazines to newspapers and pamphlets. Marlou and her team ensure the diligent expansion of this vast collection.

Collection policy

We enrich our collection of modern prints through donations, deposits and purchases. During the selection, we meticulously follow our collection policy. Important areas are language and literature in Flanders and the culture and history of Flanders, and Antwerp in particular.

We try to collect as many works as possible from these key areas. For example, when it comes to Flemish literature, we purchase collector’s editions and other rare variants of works we already collect. We also pay a lot of attention to what is called ‘grey literature’. These are publications that did not appear at a regular publisher or are commercially available, like zines for example. Besides printed materials, we also collect ‘born digital’ publications.

Collection in the spotlight

We put special collection pieces, sub-collections or acquisitions differently in the spotlight: via our newsletters and social media, via articles and relevant magazines, by organising workshops and show & tells for (higher) education institutions and by contributing to exhibitions.

Research

The extensive collection of the Heritage Library Hendrik Conscience is a room full of treasures for researchers. As a scientific archive library, we actively support research about our collection and the areas of expertise we specialise in. We also participate in research projects when possible.
