Educational coordinator

Thomas Martin

Our educational mission is all about information literacy. How do you adequately and critically work with the information that is available today? Thanks to our collection, a true treasure trove of information, we have a lot of experience on this subject ourselves, which we pass on to schools. We also focus on education online. Thomas Martin is our educational coordinator.

Educational activities

Introductory visits

Our most important target audiences are students of the third grade of secondary schools. Nevertheless, NT2-classes also found their way to the Heritage Library. The introductory visits are a nice way for them to get to know the institution and, of course, we would love to see them again in their higher studies.

Workshops

In our workshops, we teach the students how to critically handle the overload of information. Navigating smarter on the internet gives insight in the workings of search engines like Google. Other workshops, like the workshop Media scanners, point out the dangers of misinformation and manipulation. We organise some workshops ourselves, either with us or on location. For others we can count on experts.

Education Advisory Board

Education is becoming increasingly important in the way we work. To help us expand this facet, we started an Advisory Board in November 2020 with teachers and colleagues from the broad cultural educational field. They form a nice soundboard of experts. These loyal ambassadors come each year to give us feedback on our educational policy, scale enlargement and further development.

Content and development

Education is becoming increasingly accessible online. That is why Thomas, along with a few colleagues, is also responsible for the digital communication. He makes sure the website remains updated with inspiring articles. Think of tips to cleverly navigate the internet, interviews with young researchers or articles about our educational sources. There are also plans to create a bigger educational platform for online workshops and activities.

Reading room employee

To remain close to the readers and the collection, Thomas is also permanently part of our reading room team. That ranges from counter duties, retrieving and preparing works to the scanning of applications and assisting with reader’s queries. Physically in the reading room and online via email.
