Hidden gem
The Nottebohm Room is the hidden gem of the Hendrik Conscience Heritage Library. During the summer, you can explore the Nottebohm Room on your own and immerse yourself in its unique atmosphere. It's a rare opportunity to soak in this atmospheric space, which is normally only open to the public during special events and tours. As you step inside, the wooden floor creaks softly beneath your feet and the scent of over 150,000 historic books fills the air. Leave the hectic city behind, and immerse yourself in the peaceful atmosphere of this awe-inspiring space.

Audio tour
Ever wondered who the Nottebohm Room is named after? What it looked like a hundred years ago? Which rare treasures are kept here? And why it's so dimly lit? Visitors to the Nottebohm Room are often bursting with questions. A brand-new audio tour, available in five languages, answers all these questions and more. Take a journey through the fascinating history of the library, from its earliest pages to the present-day role of this heritage institution.
Exhibition Beyond the Book
While visiting the Nottebohm Room, don’t miss the special exhibition Beyond the Book.
This exhibition brings together bibliophile books and artists’ publications that push the boundaries of what a book can be. Straddling the boundary between reading material and visual art, these works invite you to reimagine the book as both object and idea. Be inspired by these extraordinary publications, and discover the stories behind their creation.
