During the summer months, modified opening hours apply in our reading room. From 17 June to 31 August 2024, the reading room will be open Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 5 pm.

The Nottebohm Room is a hidden gem. This prestigious library space shines in all its facets. And from this summer you can also discover the magic of this unique place in the heart of Antwerp on your own.

Reading room

In our reading room you can consult all collection items of the Hendrik Conscience Heritage Library. You can also search our digital databases and have reproductions made. And for those who want to get to know the library and its heritage collections in more detail, there are our introductory sessions or workshops.

The Nottebohm Room

As well as being used for book storage and as an exhibition space, the Nottebohm Room is also the place where some of the highlights of the collection are kept. It is only open during public activities organised by the library or during tours.

The Hendrik Conscience Heritage Library spans more than five centuries of Antwerp and Flemish history. Its unique and complete collection encompasses rare old editions as well as more contemporary publications and popular, contemporary periodicals, on paper, microfilm or in digital form.


The building and the collection both are considered Flemish heritage. The story of the Hendrik Conscience Heritage Library started in 1481, with 41 books. Today it is one of the most important heritage libraries in Flanders.
